Our History
In May of 2018, Boys Scouts of America announced that for the first time in the program’s over 100 years of operation, girls would be allowed to join Scouts BSA (formerly Boy Scouts). At that moment, a seed was planted. Countless young ladies across the country, who had previously been denied the opportunity to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, anxiously awaited February 1st, 2019. Seven of those young ladies formed the core of Scouts BSA Troop 19, Auburn, Alabama. They proudly wear the title of Founder and unofficially, they are “The First 7”.
Motivated and excited for the chance, these young ladies began a journey that would take them from Scout to Eagle. Some were a little older, and had to hurry to complete the requirements before they turned 18. Some were motivated to be among the first females to earn their Eagle. Others approached it as an opportunity to learn, grow, and build friendships that will last a lifetime. All of them were grateful for the opportunity.
The rest of 2019 was filled with kayaking on the Coosa River, camping in Providence Canyon, visiting the National Infantry museum in Columbus Georgia, and visiting Noccalula Falls. By the time our Court of Honor was held in December of 2019, we had gained 2 more Scouts and were awarding dozens of merit badges, awards and rank advancements.
In February 2020, we celebrated our first anniversary by holding the 1st Annual Woods Women event at Camp FGL. Scouts from three Troops were invited for a weekend of fun and fellowship, where the Scouts were able to relax, and the adults did the work. Troop 19 won the “coveted” Golden Spoon in the Dutch Oven Dessert Cook-Off.
The COVID Pandemic derailed almost all Scouting activities until September 2020. We slowly began meeting again, under new BSA guidelines. Four members of the Troop were selected for the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s camping honor society. Our first camping trip in nearly a year was in November 2020, at FGL. Also in November of 2020, we gained our FIRST Eagle Scout, Claudia M.
2021 started with eased restrictions on camping and meetings, so we scheduled trips to Moundville State park and Pensacola Florida to visit the Naval Aviation Museum. Mother Nature was not kind to us on either trip, with brutally cold weather for one and a monsoon for the other.
Summer of 2021 saw two Scouts attend NYLT and three others participate as Staff members. Five Scouts went to summer camp, including three High Adventure treks.
